Rome

Feb. 6, 2009

Well when I woke up this morning I felt so nauseous that I almost didn't get on the bus to Rome. It was that kind of feeling when you wake up way too early, have no food and know you're about to be trapped traveling for hours.. I've had this issue with traveling in the early a.m. since I was little, but I think it might be common?? I ate a croissant and got a window seat so I just fell asleep listening to my ipod right away.

When we were about 30 minutes outside of Rome I woke up and there were all these little villages up on the hills and on cliffsides with castles and walls., They're so old, it's crazy to think about all the things those towns have probably been through. We got into Rome and there were palm, orange and lemon trees everywhere. They dropped us off on the side of the road where we met our tourguide Fabrizio. Rome is much bigger than Florence in every way possible: bigger homes, bigger hotels, bigger monuments, bigger roads, bigger people. Our guide was good; a little perverted, but good. He took us to see the Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Pantheon, Campo di Fiori, Piazza Navona and the Italian Embassy. We ended the tour at our hotel, Hotel Torre Argentina.

FACT: Anyone can be married at the Pantheon for $300 but the waitlist is 3 years and they don't close it for a wedding so there are tourists everywhere.

We had lunch near our hotel at Insalata Ricca, then we went shopping. I bought a new black jacket.. perfetto! We showered and went out to eat at Campo di Fiori, I had the penne alla vodka and we had a few bottles of wine. The server brought us shots too and I have no idea what they were but they had whipped cream all over them. The entire meal was so cheap, we ended up staying and doing more shots with the bartenders. Then we decided to try and find Ice Club which turned out to be a process but we made it (ooh and we passed the Colosseum all lit up!) We put on capes and gloves and went in.. it was so small in there and freeezinggg but we got great drinks called Frozen Suns and crammed into one of the little igloos at the side of the room. We were in for about twenty minutes and were ready to go, SO cold! So we all headed back to Campo di Fiori for crepes & gelato, where some guy tried to push me into a corner and steal my purse but I somehow kind of dodged him, he just mumbled in Italian and yelled things up the street. After that we went back to the hotel because we were exhausted and for some reason all the bars in Rome were closed? There's a tour scheduled for tomorrow but we're not going on it because we're too tired.
